CALL FOR PAPERS
The Research Centre for German and Austrian Exile Studies at the Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies invites proposals for papers for its next conference to be held at the University of London from Wednesday 28th to Friday 30th September 2011 on the subject of
GERMAN-SPEAKING EXILES IN THE PERFORMING ARTS IN BRITAIN 1933 TO THE PRESENT
The purpose of the conference is to investigate and evaluate the contribution of German-speaking exiles to the performing arts in Britain, asking: How did it enrich and how did it change prevailing British culture in the performing arts?
Conference Languages: English and German
Suggested Topic Areas:
• Pre-war and/or wartime contributions by German-speaking artists to British theatre, film, music, dance etc.
• Exile theatre groups such as the Austrian Centre’s ‘Laterndl’, the ‘Kleine Bühne’ of the FDKB, the Blue Danube Club, the Lessing-Bühne etc.
• Post-war contributions to British theatre, film and TV by German-speaking actors and other theatre and film practitioners.
• The influence of German/Austrian film-makers on the British film industry in the 1930s and 1940s
• Writing for theatre and/or film
• Music in British exile: composition and performance
• The Actors Refugee Committee 1938-40
• The German Service and the Austrian Service of the BBC
• Theatre and film criticism in exile (e.g. Paul Marcus, Monty Jacobs, Lutz Weltmann).
• Those who went back (e.g. Annemarie Hase, Gerry Wolff, Peter Zadek) - and what they took with them
A selection of the papers will be published as Volume 14 of the Yearbook of the Centre in 2012.

The conference will be supported by the Martin Miller and Hannah Norbert-Miller Trust Fund and it is therefore hoped to offer financial support for two speakers from Austria or Germany.
